But we should not forget the role played by container terminals that load and unload the ships and the trucks and trains that carry the containers to and from the terminals. These elements all play crucial roles in this efficient intermodal transport system.

The Container Shipping Information Service (CSIS) is an organisation, formed in 2007, comprising 23 of the largest container shipping companies across the world (see About Us for members list).

We are all consumers and, as such, CSIS would like us all to develop an understanding of the container shipping industry and the benefits it brings to our daily lives.
- Why has this service been created?
CSIS was formed to give the global container shipping industry a voice with which to communicate with the world. Normally people do not give the world of container shipping a second thought. Yet, without it, modern life would not exist in the way we know it. In this context, the aim of CSIS is to encourage an understanding and appreciation in the wider world about the container shipping industry, and to show the benefits that it brings to our everyday lives.
- Why is the Container Shipping Information Service important to me?
Look around you. Almost everything in your home, office or the internet cafe that you are in will at some point have been inside a container. The way that container shipping allows vast quantities of goods to be traded across the globe more quickly than ever before means that as consumers, we can enjoy a huge range of products at prices that would scarcely have been conceivable in the past.
